Community Groups
The following Community Groups will receive grants to support their ongoing work in the community as a result of the success of the 2023 Waiau PA Hop
Waiau Pa/Clarks Beach Playgroup
Playgroup started here back in 1985 and was originally located out of the Sunday school behind the Church by the Seashore. As the role increased, in the early 90s, the Playgroup relocated to the old bowling club building located behind the current bowling club building in Clarks Beach along Torkar Rd. At the time the role was 53 children. Playgroup still operates to this day and is a great way to for mums and bubs to get together. If you would like to get in touch please email clarksbeachplaygroup@gmail.com or connect through their facebook page.
Waiau Pa Scouts
Scouts was started in the area in 1953. The first scout den was located on the corner of Waiau Pa Rd, Mckenzie Rd. In the early 60’s, there was over 75 kids enrolled and they realised they would need a bigger building, Money was raised and they purchased an old school building, knocking it down and selling the timber but retained some flooring and doors which still stand in the current Scout building to this day, located at the Waiau Pa domain, which was opened in 1969. Scouts is a great program for boys and girls, of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking and more. Scouts is active in our community today. If you would like to join, please email waiaupa@group.scouts.nz
Community Library
In May 1957 the first public library for the area was started out of Mr & Mrs Hosking home and later re located to Mr & Mrs Masters home. The books for the school and public library were sourced from the Country Library Service, where a van would pop out and rotate the books 3 times a year. When the first dedicated library was originally built at the school in 1976 (as previously was located in a corridor at the school) it serviced both the school and the public and in time it became a school library only. Today we have a small but well stocked and resourceful library, with a wide range of preloved books and books provided by the Auckland Library every four month, puzzles and dvds on offer, located in the building behind the Church by the Seashore on Torkar Rd. Open Tues and Thursday mornings 9am - 11am and Sat afternoons 1pm-3pm. Look out for the yellow flag.
